ZARASAI REGION

Territory
133,900 hectares, of which 37.93% are agricultural lands, 35.38% - forests, 12.14% - water areas, 0.75% - towns and residential areas, 1.72% - industrial companies and roads, and 12.08% - areas of other designation.

Population
24,630 inhabitants, of whom 40.2% reside in towns and 59.8 % in rural areas. Of the total, 46.93% are men, and 53.07% - women. Ethnic descent: 69.2% are Lithuanian, 21.3% - Russian, 7.4% - Polish, 1% - Belorussian, 1.1% - of other descents.

10 subdisdricts, 12 post offices, a bus station, a railway junction, an aerodrome, a tourist information centre, a motel, 5 pre-schools, 7 elementary schools, 9 schools of basic education, 7 secondary schools, a gymnasium, a special school, a vocational school, a school of agriculture, 41 cultural institutions, 12 Catholic churches, 5 houses of worship of other confessions, 3 museums, 24 libraries, 355 archaeological, historical and cultural monuments, 3 health care facilities, a state owned company, 11 public stock companies, 61 closed stock companies, 250 individually owned companies, 19 agricultural enterprises, and 14 companies of other status.
