VARENA REGION

Territory
241,700 hectares, of which 22.63% are agricultural lands, 65.74% - forests, 2.15% - water areas, 1.15% - towns and residential areas, 2.39% - industrial companies and roads, and 5.94% - areas of other designation.

Population
37,300 inhabitants, of whom 32% reside in towns and 68 % in rural areas. Of the total, 47% are men, and 53% - women. Ethnic descent: 90% are Lithuanian, 7.7% - Polish, 1.1% - Belorussian, 1% - Russian, 0.2% - of other descents.

9 subdisdricts, 19 post offices, a bus station, 2 tourist information centres, 6 hotels, 8 pre-schools, 13 elementary schools, 11 schools of basic education, 10 secondary schools, a special school, a school of agriculture, an institute of scientific research, 23 cultural institutions, 13 Catholic churches, 4 museums, 31 libraries, 191 archaeological, historical and cultural monuments, 31 health care facilities, 3 state owned companies, 10 public stock companies, 129 closed stock companies, 415 individually owned companies, 14 agricultural enterprises, and 70 companies of other status.
