Territory
165,900 hectares, of which 37.43% are agricultural lands, 42.13% - forests, 5.12% - water areas, 2.29% - towns and residential areas, 2.47% - industrial companies and roads, and 10.56% - areas of other designation.

Population
79,800 inhabitants, of whom 70.3% reside in towns and 29.7% - in rural areas. Of the total, 47,5% are men, and 52.5% - women. Ethnic descent: 58% are Lithuanian, 24% - Polish, 11% - Russian, 4% Belorussian, and 3% - of other descents.

12 subdisdricts, 23 post offices, a bus station, an aerodrome, tourist information centre, 3 hotels, a motel, 14 pre-schools, 7 kindergarten-schools, 21 elementary schools, 13 schools of basic education, 19 secondary schools, a gymnasium, a youth school, 2 special schools, a vocational school, school of agriculture, 2 colleges, 47 cultural institutions, 16 Catholic churches, 4 houses of worship of other confessions, 2 museums, 28 libraries, 182 archaeological, historical and cultural monuments, a theatre, sports centre, 32 health care facilities, 20 public stock companies, 353 closed stock companies, 909 individually owned companies, 60 agricultural enterprises, and 20 companies of other status.
