Population 55,860 inhabitants. Ethnic descent: 97 % are Lithuanian, 1,8 % - Russian, 1,2 % - of other descents. Region facilities 8 sub districts, a bus station, a railway junction, 5 pre-schools, 22 elementary schools, 12 schools of basic education, 11 secondary schools, a special school, a school of agriculture, 18 cultural institutions, 11 Catholic churches, a museum, a sports center, 28 health care facilities, 25 public stock companies, 113 closed stock companies, 1,105 individually owned companies, 45 agricultural enterprises, and 29 companies of other status.
