Territory
169,100 hectares, of which 47,13 % are agricultural lands, 38,5 % - forests, 2,78 % - water bodies, 1,95 % - towns and residential areas, 2,01 % - industrial companies and roads, and 7,63 % - areas of other designation.

Population
57,310 inhabitants, of whom 51,2 % reside in towns and 48,8 % - in rural areas. Of the total, 47,6 % are men and 52,4 % are women. Ethnic descent: 98 % are Lithuanian, 1,5 % - Russian, 0,5 % - of other descents.

15 sub districts, 14 post offices, a bus station, a railroad junction, a tourist information center, 2 hotels, a motel, 11 pre-schools, 3 kindergarten-schools, 18 elementary schools, 12 schools of basic education, 12 secondary schools, a gymnasium, a youth school, 2 special schools, a school of agriculture, a college, 19 cultural institutions, 16 Catholic churches, 4 museums, 27 libraries, 411 archeological, historical, and cultural monuments, 5 health care facilities a theatre, 5 state owned companies, 25 public stock companies, 229 closed stock companies, 1,424 individually owned companies, 42 agricultural enterprises.
