KELME REGION

Territory

170,500 hectares, of which 58,18 % are agricultural lands, 26,04 % - forests, 2,35 % - water bodies, 1,94 % - towns and residential areas, 1,52 % - industrial companies and roads, and, 97 % - areas of other designation.

Population

43,100 inhabitants, of whom 37 % reside in towns, and 63 % - in rural areas. Of the total, 47,6 % are men and 52,4 % are women. Ethnic descent: 97,6 % are Lithuanian, 1,9 % - Russian, 0,5 % - of other descents.

Region facilities

11 sub districts, a post office, a bus station, a railroad junction, a tourist information center, 2 hotels, 3 pre-schools, 2 kindergarten-schools, 13 elementary schools, 21 schools of basic education, 9 secondary schools, a gymnasium, a youth school, a special school, a vocational school, a school of agriculture, 100 cultural institutions, 15 Catholic churches, 4 museums, 68 libraries, 400 archeological, historical, and cultural monuments, 37 health care facilities a theatre, 10 state and municipality owned companies, 14 public stock companies, 98 closed stock companies, 763 individually owned companies, 24 agricultural enterprises, and 3 companies of other status.
