KALVARIJA MUNICIPALITY

Kalvarija Municipality is situated in the southwest of Lithuania and the south of the Republic of Poland. Approximately 15 000 inhabitants live in the territory of this Municipality, namely in Kalavrija and four neighbourhoods - Akmenynai, Kalvarija, Liubavas and Sangruda - with a total area of 440sq km. Kalvarija Municipality distinguishes itself for a spectacular landscape and relief.
The main areas of lowlands are in the north, whereas the southern part is covered by highlands. The territory of the Municipality is rich in lakes such as Orija, Jurgezeriai, Sarkiai, Reketija and others. The state reservoir Aguonis and three local ones signify the particular character of the region. Lakes Orija, Jurgezeriai, the river Sesupe dam are not short of visitors, particularly those who admire natural beauty.
The international highway “Via Baltica”, railway Warsaw-Marijampole-Sank Petersburg crosses the territory of the Municipality. It is expected that future this will condition the growth of tourism. The border has been guarded by Lithuanian Polish customs office (Budziskas) situated in Kalvarija.
