40,200 inhabitants, of whom 37.06% reside in towns and 62.94% - in rural areas. Of the total, 46.52% are men, and 53.48% - women. Ethnic descent: 95% are Lithuanian, 3% - Russian, 0.8% - Polish, and 1.2% - of other descents.
