New European Union’s Project in Lithuania

During the last years EU programs opened the new possibilities for cultural heritage and information institutions: museums, archives, libraries, art galleries, which apply new information technologies in day-to-day activity and search new ways of contemporary services for their visitors.
Author of the article describes the new EU project CULTIVATE-CEE, purpose of which is to create the network of European cultural heritage information centers in 10 countries of Central and Eastern Europe - EU candidates.

New conception of social and cultural mission of museums is on the working schedule in today’s Lithuania. It corresponds to Western Europe’s and Northern America’s experiences, what has been few decades ago. The main direction now is education and public services.
The activities of Lithuanian museums are oriented to the wishes of the audience to find “blockbusters”, sense of security and universalism.
Sociological research have started in Lithuania in order to help to define public interest, and to check the directions of activities of museums.

Research on Burglaries of Art Values in Lithuania. Burglaries from the Museums

4th Conference of Lithuanian Museologists

The 4th Conference of Section of Scientific research of Museum Collections of the Lithuanian Museum Association “Collection and research of museum values. Discoveries, problems, perspectives” was held in May 3-4, 2001. 82 participants from 26 Lithuanian museums took part at the Conference, and 13 reports were presented. The reports of the Conference are published in the Conference’s issue “Collection and research of Lithuanian museum values. Discoveries, problems, perspectives”.
The theme for the next annual conference in 2002 is “Scientific activities of Lithuanian museums”.

Grutas Park Waits for Visitors
Grutas Park - open-air museum of soviet sculptures was opened in April 1, 2001 after long discussions within society and state institutions. Museum’s display includes monumental sculptures of soviet period, it symbolizes absurdity and brutality of soviet system and occupation, shows its political leaders and hero. The exhibits disclose manipulations with the historical facts and deformations of historical memory.
The museum is the first institution of this kind in Lithuania. Grutas Park was founded by “Hesona” Club.

Exposition of Jurgis Baltrusaitis

Memorial exposition dedicated to Lithuanian poet and diplomat Jurgis Baltrusaitis (1873-1944) was opened in Jurbarkas Land Museum. The exposition is planned to be reformed later into Jurgis Baltrusaitis Cultural Center.
Jurgis Baltrusaitis was Lithuania’s Minister in Charge in Soviet Union in 1922-1939.

Cardinal V. Sladkevicius Memorial Museum is opened
The memorial exhibition “Cardinal Vincentas Sladkevicius” was opened one year after the death of Cardinal in Kaunas. The display is located in Kaunas, M. Valanciaus str.6.
Cardinal V.Sladkevicius lived in Kaunas, in Bishops Palace in 1990-2000. The house of Cardinal was a unique center of spiritual culture, where ideas of renovation of the Lithuanian Church, problems of humanism, spiritual and social motivation of reestablishment of Lithuanian state were discussed.

New Exposition in Panevezys Land Museum

Exposition “Panevezys on the turn of XIX and XX centuries” was opened in Panevezys Land Museum.
Exposition designers refused from the traditional thematic-chronological composition of the display and made efforts to give images of the past using interiors. The display consists of three parts: photographers studio, shop and the central part connecting two first parts - composition of big format photographs of the views of the central part of the town.

Visit of the Chairman of the Pope’s Commission for Cultural Heritage in Lithuania
Meeting with the Chairman of the Pope’s Commission for Cultural Heritage Archbishop Francesco Marchisano (Watican, Rome’s Office) was organized according to the exhibition “Christianity in Lithuanian Art” program.
The guest introduced the audience about the activities of Pope’s Commission for Cultural Heritage, the protection of the sacral art, its restoration and popularization. Archbishop Francesco Marchisano was invited to Lithuania by the Director of Lithuanian Art Museum Romualdas Budrys, through the mediation of Cardinal Audrys Juozas Backis.

Cooperation Agreement: Trakai-Brodnica

The cooperation agreement was signed in Trakai island castle, in commemoration of three years of friendship between Trakai Historical Museum and Brodnica Castle Museum (Poland). Recollection Evening of the Star of Czech Opera

New Traditions in Maironis House

Maironis Museum of Lithuanian Literature collects, preserves and researches Lithuanian literary heritage. The Museum acquisited more than 5000 exhibits in the year 2000. The acquisitions were made using state budget allocations, emigrant archives and donations. The last way motivated museum administration to establish a new tradition - to present the certificate of a Honor Visitor for the valuable donations. It is planned to do annually on the International Museum Day.

Days of the Old Trade in Siauliai

Siauliai “Ausra” Museum organizes Old Trade Days in Siauliai. The event is dedicated to the International Museum Day - 18th May. Participants of the Day are team of masters of old trade, members of Club of experimental archeology.
The author stresses educational aspect of the Day, which is especially important for the schoolchildren and enables them to be acquainted with old Lithuanian trade traditions from the Age of stone to the Middle ages.

Theatre Museum Waits for Children

Specialists of Lithuanian Museum of Theatre, Music and Cinema created a new educational program “Lithuanian fairy-tale in the puppet theatre” (for 1st - 4th class pupil). The purpose of the program is to open secrets of the puppet theatre, to show children the miraculous world of theatre behind the curtain and to give a chance for pupil to act as a puppet theatre actor.

Museum - a Place of Discoveries

Live History of Voruta

750 years have passed from the first Christening of Lithuanian, made by King Mindaugas. Lithuania was recognized by The Pope, and Voruta, the main castle of Mindaugas was mentioned in Yipatij Chronicles, c.a. 1252.
Author describes the project implemented by Lithuanian Academy of Science, Institute of History and Anyksciai Museum and dedicated to the mentioned above anniversaries.

Reborn for New Life

Restoration studio of Silute museum

There were about 170 000 museum values needed restoration in Lithuanian museums in 2000. The main actor in this field in Lithuania is P. Gudynas Center of Treasure for Restoration. But it restores only 6000 exhibits per year. That’s why the possibility of establishing of regional centers of restoration of museum values is under consideration. The author of publication presents a restoration studio founded in the Silute museum’s H.Scheu’as manor. This studio should become a regional center of restoration of museum values.

Finnish Experience: Image of the Museum and the Specifics of Management
