Museum’s history fragments
The idea of the establishment of
the museum belongs to Audrius Druckus, an ethnographer and a member of
resistance who has descended from this land.
Obeliai museum was opened on December 10, 1998.
Obeliai
Obeliai, town in the northeastern
Lithuania, bordering a lake of the same name; it is 14 km east of Rokiskis
and 10 km from the Lithuanian-Latvian border.
The town, estate, and the town ship are known since the 16th century. The
town expanded considerably when the Siauliai-Daugavpils (Latvia) railroad
was routed through there in 1873. The first church was built in 1629; the
present one in 1860, remodeled in 1899. At the end of the 18th century a
parochial school was opened, the pupils being mostly peasant children. In
1828, during Russian rule, the school building was converted into a
weaving mill. During the uprising of 1905, the local peasants ousted the
Russian public officials and established their own committee. In
independent Lithuania, Obeliai served as the township seat.
