Museums history fragments
In 1965 a little exposition displaying archaeological, ethnographic items, photographs, printed matters was arranged in a wooden building of the former Maironis primary school near Pasvalys park on the concern of a teacher of history Juozas Velzis and an enthusiast of ethnography Antanas Stapulionis.
A historian Albinas Kazlauskas co-operating with school children, antiquarians of Vilnius, Kaunas, Panevezys, accumulated old publications, periodicals with the material about Pasvalys land. He managed to collect many books, other publications written, compiled by famous people descending from the land or in which they published their works.
On November 29, 1991 Pasvalys area museum was established by the decision of the municipality of the district. Material accumulated earlier has been constantly replenished with new displays.
Other
news about the Museum
Pasvalys area museum is settled in a reconstructed former cinema "Svalia".
High inner space of the building was divided horizontally into two parts. Thus, two stories appeared - two spaces without small partitions or halls. The interior somewhat resembles a ship, on the lower deck of which ethnographic displays, on the upper deck - displays telling about the development of the culture and history of the land are exhibited.
In the meantime, tourism-information center is being established in the museum.
Director of the Museum is Vita Povilioniene.
Pasvalys
Pasvalys, town in northern Lithuania, about 35 km north of Panevezys.
The town has founded in 1497 when Grand Prince Alexander bequeathed land at the confluence of the Levuo and the Svalia rivers to the church that was being built there by Rev. Jonas Grotas. The latter was given permission to open stores and taverns, to hold markets, and to collect the market fees.
Situated in an agriculturally rich district and on an important trade route to Riga (Latvia), Pasvalys became a center of commerce. At the beginning of the 18th century export of agricultural produce to Western Europe increased sharply thus contributing to the growth of Pasvalys.
During the period of the press ban, Pasvalys was a distribution point for illegal Lithuanian books; the printed contraband was smuggled in from Prussia.
With the restoration of Lithuania's independence after World War I, Pasvalys became a township seat in the county of Birzai.
Under Soviet system, Pasvalys has been a district center since 1950.
