Nature of Lazdijai District
The Lazdijai district at the border with Poland and Belarus in southern Lithuania encompasses 154 000 hectares. Its beautiful lakes and woods are untouched by man's activities.
The district boasts a host of historical and ethnographic monuments and the hospitality of the local people, the dzukai.
The population of the district is about 33 000. Most of the people live in villages and market towns.
Lazdijai, the largest town of the district, is its administrative center. Established in 1560, in May 1597 it was granted a city charter by the King of Poland and the Grand Duke of Lithuania, Sigismung Vasa. Its coat of arms bears a golden elk and three black keys. Now the town has about 5 800 inhabitants.
A bird's-eye view of the district reveals a 202-metre hill at the village of Dainavele. It is the highest point in the northern part of the district.
The Nemunas, the country's largest river, flows in the eastern part of the district. The lowest point - 66 meters below sea level - is in this part of the district. Out of over 200 lakes, the largest are the lakes of Dusia, Metelys and Seirijis. The largest wood called Kapciamiestis is rich in wildlife.
As the soil is sandy, the local people earn their living growing flax and gathering berries and mushrooms.
There are two regional parks in the district. The Meteliai Regional Park encompasses the lakes of Dusia and Metelys as well as Lake Obelija, which is in the neighboring Alytus district. The town of Veisiejai surrounded by Lake Ancia on three sides is in the central part of the Veisiejai Regional Park.
Besides these regional parks, there are several sanctuaries and natural monuments in the district. Legends are told about the fortified hills of Rudamina, Paveisininkai and Prelomeiskes.
