Exposition
This
exhibition was founded in the Lord Rector premises of Vytautas Magnus
University in Kaunas, in a room which earlier served as the office and
meeting place of the family of Stasys Lozoraitis, Senior (1898-1983). From
1934 to 1938 Stasys Lozaraitis, Sr. was a Foreign Minister for Lithuania,
and in 1939 he was appointed Special Envoy and Diplomatic Agent to Italy
and from 2nd June 1940 served as Chief Ambassador,
responsible for the entire Lithuanian diplomatic service personnel
residing in every foreign country.
Stasys Lozoraitis, Junior was born in Berlin on 2nd August 1924 into the
family of Lithuanian Diplomat Stasys Lozoraitis. From 1944 to 1948 he
studied a law at the University of Rome. In 1943 he began working in the
Lithuanian embassy at the Holy See in Rome. In 1968 he worked in the
Lithuanian embassy in Washington, DC. In 1970 he was appointed Lithuanian
delegate by the Holy See. In 1991 Lozoraitis was appointed Special Envoy
and Diplomatic Agent in the United States, and he returned to Lithuania in
1992. In 1993 he was a candidate to the presidency of the Republic of
Lithuanian. Not being elected president, Lozoraitis continued his duties
in the Lithuanian embassy in the United States and, later, the duties of
Special Envoy and Diplomatic Agent in Italy for the Republic of Lithuania.
He died on 13th June 1994 and was buried in Putnam cemetery in the United
States, but on 15th June 1999 his remains were brought to Lithuania and
reburied in a Kaunas cemetary.
Documental
materials, photographs, memorabilia and the art collection of this
prominent Lithuanian family of diplomats are exposed in this museum,
presented by Kazys Lozoraitis, brother of Stasys Lozoraitis, Jr., also an
ambassador, Daniele Lozoraitis the widower of Stasys Lozaraitis, Jr., and
Dalia Dankeviciute-Brazauskiene, a relative of the Lozaraitis family.
The authenticity of the exhibition enables the viewer to relive the
atmosphere and spirit of the prominent people of former times, in addition
to reflecting numerous historical facts and the values of the 20th
Century.
The museum accumulates and preserves such archival materials as: audio and
video recordings, musical compacts, documents, articles, photographs, and
letters, both official and personal.
The documental video recordings are mainly about the Lozoraitis family
diplomats and their activity, in addition to some recordings of official
ceremonies and events.
The audio recordings present speeches, interviews, memoirs, conversations
and stories of Stasys Lozoraitis, Jr. and the people who knew his family
very well.
