Territory
149,200 hectares, of which 44.71% are agricultural lands, 43,77% - forests, 1,74% - water areas, 2,21% - towns and residential areas, 2,41% - industrial companies and roads, and 5,16% - areas of other designation.

Population
39,900 inhabitants, of whom 25.62% reside in towns and 74.38% - in rural areas. Of the total, 48.53% are men, and 51.47% are women. Ethnic descent: 9.4% are Lithuanian, 79.6% - Polish, 5.8% - Russian, 3.8% Belorussian, and 1.4% - of other descents.

15 subdisdricts, 16 post offices, a bus station, 2 railroad junctions, 2 hotels, a motel, 14 pre-schools, 31 elementary schools, 18 schools of basic education, 16 secondary schools, 6 special schools, a school of agriculture, 18 cultural centres, 31 Catholic churches, 5 houses of worship of other confessions, a museum, 28 libraries, 130 archaeological, historical and cultural monuments, a sports complex, 28 health care facilities, 2 state owned companies, 17 public stock companies, 196 closed stock companies, 390 individually owned companies, 16 agricultural enterprises, and 74 companies of other status
