Museums
collection
The Museums current collection consists of various art works
by Janina Monkute Marks including paintings, prints, rugs and tapestries.
Tapestries and rugs
The Janina Monkute Marks Museum-Gallery has a great
collection of Janina Marks textile works, produced by Janina Marks
from1970 to 2001. Weaving was her favorite subject when she attended
Freiburgs Ecole des Arts et Metiers. My tapestries evolved
from my paintings, they are the diary of my life.
Paintings
The distinct phases of paintings by Janina Marks represent
her life experiences and observations. Starting in 1960, her early
paintings reflect the drama of World War II and her emigration to the
United States. Later Janina turned to a more decorative flat surfaced art,
inspired by advertising and popular culture. In the 1970s, she found
inspiration from her ancient roots, Lithuanian Folk Art. She created huge
colourful canvases depicting folk tales, legends, songs and symbols from
old religious woodcarvings. The ever-popular Rupintojelis,
known as Sorrowing Christ, also found a home within these canvases.
Exposition
Gift to the Native Land
In the first hall of exposition
the new Gobelin tapestry and carpets created by the artist in 1970-2000
are demonstrated.
The second hall contains paintings created by Janina Marks in 1968-1974
and famous for their folk art symbolism.
The third hall is designed for the pop art period. It exhibits works of
painting created by Janina Marks in 1962-1966. They are authentic samples
of American pop art.
Big- formatted pictures, bright colors, industrial paints, images of the
consumer society of that period.
The fourth hall shows the early works of art (of fifties-sixties) by
Janina Marks. Among them painted canvasses and collages reflecting
experiences of World War Two and emigration.
Exhibitions
The gallery also displays temporary exhibits by local artists
as well as other prominent Lithuanian artists with an emphasis on textile
arts.

Museum
facilities
In 2000, Janina Marks established
a Not For Profit Institution in Kedainiai. The Institution purchased a 100
year old building for use as a Museum. The buildings interior was
modernized to meet contemporary Museum standards while the exterior was
restored to reflect the historical significance of this fine old
structure. The Museum currently displays paintings, prints, rugs and
tapestries created by and donated by Janina Monkute Marks. The Museum
opened its doors to the public on October 20, 2001.
