Museum specialists and educated people know what a museum is and what it’s purpose is in Lithuania. Many people can easily define these purposes: to collect, to preserve, investigate and expose cultural and historical heritage. We noticed that European countries nowadays are at the beginning of the new stage at International Conference of Museologists in Stockholm in June 10-13, 2001.

ICOM - Barcelona - 2001

Pranas Domsaitis Gallery and Cultural Center Invites Visitors

Pranas Domsaitis Gallery and Cultural Center was opened in Klaipeda Gallery, division of Lithuanian Art Museum in July 26, 2001.
Painter Pranas Domsaitis (1880-1965) became famous in Germany after The WWI and in South African Republic - after WWII. His name one can find in many encyclopedias of modern art. A number of his creative works came back to Lithuania in 1990-2001 thanks to the efforts of Lithuanian Foundation. Lithuanian Foundation donated 528 paintings of Pranas Domsaitis to Lithuanian Art Museum. The return of art works by Pranas Domsaitis is important event in the cultural life of the country.

Exhibition of Lithuanian Freedom Fighters is Opened

for Public Relations of Lithuanian Open Air Museum

New exposition “The Freedom-Fighter’s Bunker” was opened in Lithuanian Open Air Museum in August 25, 2001. Author of the exhibition is Dr. E.J.Morkunas. Exhibition is composed according to the archival materials and stories of the witnesses of the events. The exhibits and other materials of the exposition are presented by the colleagues from Lithuanian Genocide Victims Museum, Lithuanian Volunteers Museum and by the former freedom-fighters. Cast iron stove (which was a usual item in a bunker), kerosene lamp, typewriter, radio set are exposed. Wooden copies of the guns were hand-made by the author of the exposition.

Exhibition Held with Enthusiasm is Opened

Vitas Rimkus, Head of Kaunas Fire-Prevention and Rescuing Service

The exhibition of Lithuanian Fire Prevention History was officially opened in Lithuanian Aviation Museum in May 4, 2001, on the day of Florion, Guardian of firemen. New exposition exhibits old firemen cars, various water-pumps, firemen uniforms, collection of old fire extinguishers, photographs etc.

International Conference in Seteniai

Regina Adomaitiene, Teacher-Guide, Kedainiai Land Museum

The international conference “Colloquium Balticum. The Baltic Region in the Scale of Europe” was held in Seteniai, Kedainiai county, the birthplace of Czeslav Milosh. Conference was held by Kedainiai Municipality and Torun Regional Cultural Heritage Research and Preservation Center. The event was dedicated to 90th anniversary of Nobel Prize Winner Cz.Milosh.

Beginning of the Great Exile - 1941

Lithuanian National Museum invited visitors to the exhibition “Beginning of The Great Exile - 1941”, in June 13th, 2001, dedicated to the 60th anniversary of the first day of massive deportations - June 14, 1941.
Exhibition displays documents, photographs, personal properties of the statesmen, officers, teachers and other repressed people.

The Third Renovation of Exhibition “Christianity in Lithuanian Art”

Exhibition of Lithuanian Art Museum “Christianity in Lithuanian Art”, renovated for the third time was opened in Lithuanian Museum of Applied Art in July 5th, 2001. It was dedicated to the Anniversary of Christ and 750th Anniversary of christening of King Mindaugas (1251) and Mindaugas King’s Crown (1253). Exhibition was held under the wardship of The President of Republic of Lithuania Valdas Adamkus, Vilnius Archbishop Metropolite Audrys Juozas Backis. This exposition includes 100 restored exhibits of sacral art.

Visit of Cardinal J. M. Mejia in Lithuania

Rome’s Cardinal Jorge Maria Mejia, Head of Vatican Secret Archive and Vatican Apostolic Library visited Lithuania in July 4-8th, 2001. He was invited by Lithuanian Art Museum. In july 5th Cardinal participated at the presentation of the third exposition of exhibition “Christianity in Lithuanian Art”, renovated with valuable collections. Cardinal gave lecture about Vatican Secret Archive and Vatican Apostolic Library and it’s activities, about the Vatican’s point of view on the work of archives and libraries, about opening of these institutions for new researches and publications.

Celebration of The State Day in Trakai

Medieval Festival was held on occasion of The State Day - King Mindaugas Crown Day in Trakai castle in July 6-8th. The Festival was organized by Trakai Museum of History and Academy of Cultural Heritage.
Knights from Olshtyn (Poland) and members of Baltic wrestling club “Vilkatlakiai” participated in the Festival, as every year. The novel of this festival was participation of mounted knights. There was a united team of riders from Josvainiai, Krakes and Dotnuva. Knights demonstrated ancient armory and fight methods. Intelligence officers from mothorised infantry brigade “The Iron Wolf” demonstrated modern guns and fight methods. Visitors could watch craftworks of medieval craftsmen.

Exhibition Organized by Lithuanian Art Museum and Lithuanian Collectors Association in Radvilos Palace

Exhibition “Ancient Artistic Furniture from XVI-XIX Centuries” was opened in Radvilos Palace (Vilniaus str. 22) in July 17th, 2001.
This exhibition exposes the best furniture collections from Lithuanian Art Museum, tells the history of furniture making in Lithuania and other European countries.
Lithuanian Collectors Association helped Lithuanian Art Museum in organization of this exposition and provided it with tens of exhibits - furniture of different styles, ancient, little known furniture made in European countries and USA.

Japanese Modern Artistic Craft in Lithuanian Exhibition Halls

The exhibition “Japanese Modern Artistic Craft in Lithuanian Exhibition Halls” held by Lithuanian Art Museum was exposed in it’s divisions in Palanga Amber Museum and Vilnius Art Gallery in August 2001. This was the first mobile Japanese exhibition organized by Informational and Cultural Center, Embassy of Japan, Japanese Foundation and Lithuanian Art Museum.
One exhibition per year initiated by Japanese Foundation is exposed in Lithuania after the opening of Japanese Embassy in Vilnius in 1997. Everyone who is interested in Japanese art has an occasion to watch kites and wolf’s cubes, modern posters and artistic photographs exhibitions in Vilnius, Kaunas and Panevezys.

Ciurlionis Exhibition in Warsaw

Exhibition “Ciurlionis. Creation. Personality. Medium.” Was exposed in Warsaw National Museum in September, 2001. This exhibition was planned as the main event at The Days of Lithuanian Culture, dedicated to the re-establishment of diplomatic relations between Poland and Lithuania.
Ciurlionis’ paintings were exposed in 18 countries at international exhibitions in Japan, Germany, Canada, Spain, Italy, Swiss, France during the last decade.

Canon Shots Announced the Beginning of “European Heritage Days” in Nerija Fort

The purpose of “European Heritage Days” is to pay attention to abandoned monuments of culture, values and traditions. Events of “European Heritage Days” - 2001 were dedicated to the fortifications.
“European Heritage Days” were held by Lithuanian Sea Museum (opened in XIX century in Nerija Fort) in September 22-28, 2001.

Donations for Numismatists of Lithuanian National Museum

Numismatics Collection of Lithuanian National Museum was replenished by the donations of Honorary Chairman of Polish Numismatists Club collector Lech Kokonicky. He donated 16 coins and medals. He also donated tens of numismatic items to the Library of Museum.

Donations for the Homeland

Exhibition of new exhibits donated by exile painter Magdalena Birute Stankunaite-Stankuniene to her native land was opened during the summer time in Vilkaviskis Land Museum.
Painter Magdalena Stankuniene visits museum of her native land every year coming from Chicago and donates her or her family members relics to the Land Museum. The painter’s fund in Vilkaviskis Land Museum was replenished with 125 donated issues.

“Living Archeology” in Kernave Archeological and Historical Museum - Reservation

III-rd Festival of Experimental Archeology “Days of Living Archeology in Kernave” was held in Kernave Museum - Reservation, on the Castle - Hill in July 6-8th, 2001. This was continuation of events dedicated to the King Mindaugas Crown Day. There were pro-historical and early medieval craft works demonstrated during the Festival. There was educational program organized for young people. More than 50 craftsmen from different Lithuanian museums, educational and research institutions presented reconstructed crafts.

Craft Days in Lithuanian Open Air Museum

Craft Days were held in Lithuanian Open Air Museum in September 8-9, 2001. Hammersmith, carving craftsmen, whitesmith, wood turners, cooper-smith, cooper, potters, sculptors, egg-painters, jewelers were gathering here. Festival was enlivened by ancient food making on the open bonfire.

Pro-historical and Early-medieval Crafts in Neringa

Ancient pro-historical and early-medieval crafts reborn every year in the late August in Nida pier square. Events are organized by specialists from Neringa Historical Museum. Museologists and archeologists from all Lithuanian regions demonstrated ancient Kurlandic crafts and mode of life .
