The traditional “Lithuanian Meetings” took place in Wetzlar, the city of youth of J.W.Goethe. There are Lithuanian and German writers, artists of all fields, librarians, translators meeting there. The event is organized by The Wetzlar Library of the Fantastic every two years. The Library of Wetzlar is, probably the main institution which popularize Lithuanian culture. This year’s theme of “The Meeting” was theatre and literature, inspired by 50-th Wetzlar Summer Theatre Festival dedicated to the creative works of W.Shakespeare and Frankfurt Book Fair which will take place in October, this year.
The event starts with the exhibition “Theatre in Lithuania”, held by Lithuanian Museum of Theatre, Music and Cinema. As organizers of “The Meeting” expressed the wish to represent Lithuanian productions of German drama writers and W.Shakespeare, there was an exhibition prepared, to open a wide panorama of creative work of Lithuanian theatre:
sketches of stage design and costumes of drama and opera productions, posters, programs of the performances, photographs and costumes. Managers of Wetzlar Museum decided to show the exhibition for a longer period of time and that was why the success of this exhibition became the beginning of series of exhibitions held abroad by Lithuanian Museum of Theatre, Music and Cinema.
Lithuanian and German teatrologists, literaturologists and theatre artists discussed the history of theatres of both countries, creative work, modern tendencies at the Conference held in the City Hall of Wetzlar. The works of Lithuanian artists, dedicated to the Frankfurt Book Fair, were represented. The performance of Oskaras Korsunovas Theatre “Malys” and the exhibition of photographs by Ramune Pygagaite “People of my Town” were an opportunity for participants of “The Meeting” to get acquainted with Lithuanian art.

Exhibition “Christianity in Lithuanian Art” dedicated to the one thousand anniversary was renovated for the fifth time in The Museum of Applied Art (Arsenalo str. 3A) was open in July 4-th, 2002.
This exhibition is the only of that importance, scale and exhibiting period, and exeptional in terms of numerous renovations. This time, the exhibition “Christianity in Lithuanian Art” was replenished with more than one hundred of unique exhibits of sacral art. Part of them is unknown for society, the other - reborn after precise work of specialists from P.Gudynas Restauration Center.
Specialists of Lithuanian Art Museum have found these works of art in Panevezys and Siauliai Episcopates and lend them. The presentation of sacral art from Kaunas and Vilkaviskis Episcopates continued; some of exhibits brought to the exhibition from collections of Lithuanian Art Museum.
The renovation of the exhibition is the occasion to see the works of sacral textile, paintings, woodcarving, and jewelry, made by masters of XVI-XX-th century. There is a sensation among new exhibits: two tapestries from Flandrian workshops of XVI-XX-th century, values of European importance, reborn after several years of restoration. The first tapestry “Pan and Siringa” (after Ovidius “Metamorphosis”) is rare not only in terms of the artistic value, but also is one of the biggest remaining old webs (3,30x5, 75m), which was restored centimeter after centimeter. The second tapestry is herb-portiere, one of the series of four webs of Mykolas Kazimieras Pacas, Grand Hetman of Lithuanian Commonwealth and Vilnius.
This renovation of the exhibition followed by the important publication of the museum, representational album “Treasury of Vilnius Archcathedral” to represent over 200 values of treasury in Lithuanian and English. The presentation of this album was held in Presidential House in July, 5th, 2002, 11.00. AM with participation of the President Mr.Valdas Adamkus, sponsors and authors.
