/Interview with Chairman of Lithuanian Museum Association Romualdas Budrys/

Director of Lithuanian Art Museum Romualdas Budrys was elected the Chairman of Lithuanian Museum Association for the period 2002-2004 at the General Meeting of LMA in the end of 2001. The purposes of LMA are to unite Lithuanian museums for common activities, to organize and to stimulate cooperation of museums and museum specialists, mutual support of Lithuanian museums. Members of LMA are 68 Lithuanian museums.
The majority of Lithuanian Museums during twelve years of rebuilt Lithuania’s independence overcame out-of-date stereotypes, barriers, and politically inspired confrontations. There were many changes in all spheres of the activities of museums: expositions of the museums were renovated, organization of exhibitions became more active as educational activities as well, museum publications grew in numbers, there were many changes in the network of Lithuanian museums and it’s structure, valuable cultural projects opened Lithuanian museums to the world
The main document for the state cultural policy “Guidelines to the Lithuanian Cultural Policy” classifies Lithuanian museums as institutions of development of informational society: “Museums have to subordinate collection and preservation of cultural values with informational public relations and education”. The program of modernization of museums is to be prepared and implemented”. This is why the board of Lithuanian Museum Association has to complete the program of renovation and modernization of technical equipment of Lithuanian museums, uniting the efforts of all Lithuanian museum specialists. CULTIVATE - European Cultural Heritage Informational Network

Audrone GLOSIENE, Jurate ZVIKAITE,
Vilnius University, Faculty of Communication

European Union’s (EU) cultural heritage and information policy opens new opportunities for institutions, as libraries, archives and museums, often called “institutions of memory”. Priorities of the programs of the Commission are development of informational products and services, access and consumption of information, creation of life long learning systems, creation of informational networks. But, there are only few “memory” organisations bringing themselves to the participation in the complex EU programs. That is why Cultivate (Cultural Heritage Applications Network) a new EC financed project occurred. The main purposes of the Network are to create a network to connect European cultural heritage and information institutions, to inform about EU programs, opportunities and ways to participate in the EU programs, to stimulate cooperation between institutions of this category.
Project CULTIVATE was started in Lithuania last year. This is a new project; that is why it’s contents, goals and purposes are analysed in the article, as woks, already implemented in Europe and Lithuania, as well.

Neringa Historical Museum In The New Premises

Eleonora Regina JONUSIENE, Director, Neringa Historical Museum

The town of Neringa celebrated it’s 40-th anniversary in November 15-th, 2000. New house on Neringa Historical Museum has opened it’s doors to the community and the guests of the town during the days of the celebration. Winner of the National Price, Nida’s native architect Ricardas Kristapavicius adopted café “Uzuoveja”, build in Soviet times, to the new functions of the museum and the library.
The old building of café “Uzuoveja” was not a typical one of that period of time and that is, why the architect didn’t change the outside of the building. Traditional blue colour of the facade, characteristic for Curonian neck, has exposed the roof-line and, also, connected the outside of the building with interior into the whole one, reminding the colours of the Baltic sea, the most clear reflections of which we can see in the colour of the ceramic floor, imitating the bottom of the sea. The interior keeps the space, necessary for modern museum. The main in the interior is the exposition hall of 250 square meters.
The museum is adapted to the needs of disabled people. The exhibition-hall contains necessary modern equipment and excellent lighting. The equipment allows to expose paintings of different size, small size sculptures and works of applied art. Modern depository of art works is equipped in the museum, too.

Regina ADOMAITIENE, Trainer and Guide, Kedainiai Museum

Lithuania’s aim to become a member state of NATO and European Union stimulates creation of the open, democratic and multicultural society. The main goal in this process is bringing up of a respect to the people of other states, not loosing the own cultural identity.
The author of the article invites readers to think, if today’s Lithuanian society is ready to adopt history and culture of all nations, living in Lithuania, to include it into it’s cultural turnover, to accept it as it’s own culture, if it is ready to understand that Vilnius Jewish Institute’s JIVO heritage is Lithuanian national value, as well as the icons and books of Russian Ortodox community. If there is understanding in the society that Ortodox Saints Eustache and Anthony are side by side with Saint Casimirus and that Kedainiai S.Georg’s Church and St.Joseph’s Church are interesting as well as interesting are Kedainiai Evangelist, Reformat, Lutheran Churches, Ortodox Church and Jewish Synagogue. To understand this and to be proud of these riches.

At The Family’s Fireside: After The Wedding Ceremony - To Open Air Museum Of Lithuania

Vida OLECHNOVICIENE, Guide, Brunch of Information
And Cultural Events, Open Air Museum Of Lithuania

Open Air Museum of Lithuania is not only museum of the old folk architecture. For the first, it is a museum of the family’s mode of life. Everyone could find a shelter at the family’s fireside: disabled and alone. Every angle of the house carries the signs of and tells the story of family relationships of a certain period of time, of it’s norms, holidays, everyday life, miseries and worries.
Wedding ceremonies are celebrated in the chapel, build in 1775 in Rackiske village, Svencionys County, one of the eldest buildings in the museum. Here, in the eight-angular building of nice proportions, decorated with authentic crosses and roadside poles with statuettes of saints, get married many couples.
