About
the Museum
The museum of Simonas Daukantas was founded by the municipality
of Akmene district in 1986. At the present the museum stores 220 exhibits.
The visitors can observe the paintings on the subject of the motifs of
Simonas Daukantas works, presented to the museum by the painters A. Svazas,
R. Tarabilda, A. Kazdailis, S. Sakalys, A. Banys, A. Surgailiene and K.
Simonis. Also, a diverse documentary data, famous people`s recollections
telling us about this well-known Samogitian and the like are on a display
in the museum. The visitors are introduced to the life story of Simonas
Daukantas, his historical and linguistic works as well as to the other
authors` works about this historian, writer and a representative of
Enlightenment in Lithuania.
The museum is situated in a Samogitian farm-house, the former altar place
not far from the Church of Papile. In this farm-house Simonas Daukantas
had spent the last years of his life. In Papile, a monument of S.
Daukantas (sculptor V. Grybas) located in the centre of the town draws
everybody`s attention as well.
