About
the Museum
In Laimužė farmstead of Gataučiai area (Joniškis Region), where some time
ago, while spending her summer at her relatives (1912–1937), the
painter-graphic artist Marcė Katiliūtė had produced a number of works, a
museum has been inaugurated. The initiators of the museum are the writers`
club Audruvė of Joniškis and its former president L. Ripskytė, who had
submitted the museum`s finance project to the Ministry of Culture. Owing to
the means obtained from the funds of the Ministry of Culture and
non-governmental organizations, two rooms (donated by the artist`s
relatives) have been repaired. The museum was founded in 1999.
Marcė
Katiliūtė
In 1935 M. Katiliūtė graduated from Kaunas Art School. In 1936 she worked as
a teacher in Palanga, in 1937 the would-be artist worked as a
preservationist in Kaunas Čiurlionis Art Museum. Her first personal
exhibition was held in 1940. Already the early pictures, sketches,
engravings of Marcė Katiliūtė (`gratazas` Našta (The Burden), flax
engravings Į talką (Coming to Help), Motina (The Mother), Žadina (Awakening)
– all produced in 1935) had been influenced by Lithuanian folk art; they
represent love towards the man.
The most of the artist`s works were created on the subject of `woman life`.
They highlight social moments (Moteris su dviem vaikais (A Woman With Two
Children), 1935; Bulves skuta (Peeling Potatoes), 1936; they depict inner
(the portrait of the artist`s mother, 1935; the portrait of the sister
Stasė, 1936; the self-portrait, 1936), dramatic, even tragical states of the
man (Miške (In the Forest), Urtė (a woman`s name), both in 1936). The artist
M. Katiliūtė has also produced a number of illustrations for the following
books: Kiškelio užrašai (The Leveret`s Notes) by Vytautas Tamulaitis, 1935;
Napalys bailys (Napalys the Coward) by Petras Cvirka, 1936; Aukštujų Šimonių
likimas (The Fate of the Šimoniai from Aukštujai Area) by Ieva Simonaitytė,
1936; unpublished; received a gold medal of the world exhibition in Paris
in1937; after death) as well as paintings. The artist`s productions are
realistic, emotional, metaphorical, reflecting folk outlook and delicately
rendering the spiritual man`s world. Their characteristic features include:
simple composition, generalized sculpture forms, rich drawing, expressive
and dynamic carving.
