Exposition
After
the opening, the Sacral Art Museum in Birštonas presents two memorial
expositions to visitors. One is dedicated to Vincentas Sladkevičius, the
Cardinal of the Holy Roman Church, another to Teofilis Matulionis, the
martyr Archbishop. There is also an exposition of sacral art containing
valuable works of religious art (painting, sculpture, textile, liturgical
dishes, folk art).
The memorial exposition is equipped in the premises of the former rectory.
In 1957, on Christmas Day Canon Vincentas Sladkevičius was consecrated
bishop. In memorial rooms the Museum’s visitors are shown valuable exhibits
out of the stored and deposited collection. The exposition of sacral art
contains valuable works of church art, which are taken out of the Birštonas
Church of Saint Anthony from Padova and other temples of the region, as well
as from the Kaišiadorys Land Museum, along with collections of the National
Lithuanian Art Museum. The community of the Birstonas town and its leaders –
Jonas Dalinevičius, the parson – Dean, and Antanas Zenkevičius, the Mayor of
town, initiated an idea to establish a museum of sacral art in Birštonas
with memorial expositions. In 1999 Vincentas Sladkevičius, the Cardinal of
Respectful Memory, approved this idea.
Exhibitions
Short-term thematic exhibitions of fine arts and history are arranged there
on a constant basis.
